Prof. Dr. Juan Manuel Blanch Nougués
Professor of Roman Law, USPCEU Juan Manuel Blanch Nougués, a graduate and doctor in Law from the Autonomous University of Madrid (1987), has been a professor at the Universities of Cádiz, Pontificia Comillas ICAI - ICADE and Complutense de Madrid. He furthered his studies at the Universities of Freiburg (Germany), as a DAAD scholarship holder, and Bologna (Italy). At the Complutense University he obtained the position of Full Professor, which he held until joining the CEU San Pablo University, first as Associate Professor and, from 1999 to the present, as Professor of Roman Law. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law of the latter University between 2000 and 2011. He has numerous publications in his specialty, focusing mainly on the following subjects: legal sources and legal language and legal terms and rules in relation to legal reasoning, obligations and contracts (with special interest in historical bankruptcy law), personal and family law, criminal law and Roman tax law. Within the framework of a national excellence project ("The Construction of Modern Bankruptcy Law in Benvenuto Stracca's Treaty De Conturbatoribus sive Decoctoribus DER2017-87401-P), he has been the first translator of Benvenuto Stracca, “De conturbatoribus sive decoctoribus” (16th century). He is co-author of a volume of Studies by this author. He is the author of the work "Latin Phrases and Legal Reasoning" (2017), (Angel Herrera Research Award that year). Research project financed by the BBVA Foundation (Logos 2020 Program) on the concept of definition in Roman Law (Project `Definitio': The concept of definition in Law through classical philosophical and legal thought). First Prize to the Improvement of the Quality of Universities of the Community of Madrid awarded to the Faculty of Law when he was Dean (2001). Ángel Herrera Award for the best teaching work (2010-2011). Ángel Herrera Research Award (2010-2011), Award for Excellence in the Degree in Law (2017). Ángel Herrera Research Award for the book «Latin Locutions and Legal Reasoning» for which he obtained the Research Award of that year. Member of the Spanish Society of Classical Studies since 1984. -Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation (since June 26, 1997). -Honorary Member of the University Association «Universitas» (for research and teaching) since February 20, 2003. -Member of the Scientific Committee of the Studium Generale Marcianum of Venice (Italy). Visiting professor at various universities outside Spain: Harvard University (USA); in Germany in Cologne and Heidelberg (of whose students he was the sponsor of the 2009 class); in Italy at the following universities: Collegio di Diritto Romano di Pavia (within the framework of the CEDANT programme), Turin and Pisa as principal investigator, a major research project on historical bankruptcy law); in Latin America: University of Guadalajara (Mexico); Sergio Arboleda University of Bogotá and Santa Marta and University of Medellín (Colombia).
Prof. Dr. Carmen Palomo Pinel
Associate Professor of Roman Law USPCEU Born in 1980 in Madrid (Spain). After studying Law (+ EU Law degree), she obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies in Philosophy of Law. She obtained her PhD in Roman Law in 2015 and was awarded the Extraordinary PhD Prize for her thesis. His work was published in a monograph entitled ‘Nec inmerito paterfamilias dicitur. El paterfamilias en el pensamiento de Lactancio’, which was awarded the Ángel Herrera prize for the best research in Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition to this work, he has published several research articles in scientific journals, book chapters and teaching materials. I have also given lectures in national and international forums. Among these articles and papers, several bear witness to the theme of the DEFINITIO project, especially those related to the term ‘vis’ as meaning and to the problem of ‘defining the definition’ in the works of Roman jurists. His research interests are the reasoning process and language of Roman jurists, together with the relationship between Roman law and patristics. She has two six-year research periods recognised by the CNEAI and is accredited as Profesora Contratada Doctora by the ANECA. She has carried out research stays at the German universities of Eichstätt and Heidelberg. She has also participated in several research projects, the latest of which ("Definitio: the concept of definition in law through classical philosophical and legal thought, BBVA Foundation) is directly related to the subject of this project. She has also been in charge of Quality at the USPCEU Law School for three years (2018-2021) and is the coordinator of students' professional internships in various courts. She currently teaches Roman Law and Oral and Written Legal Skills at the San Pablo CEU University of Madrid as an adjunct professor. She combines her teaching and research work at the University with writing poetry. In this field she has published eight books, all of which have won awards.
